Smithsonian needs $300,000 to restore Dorothy's Ruby Slippers

- What’s the most you would splash out on a pair of shoes? How about $300,000 for Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers?

There are several slippers from the Wizard of Oz in existence, but these are the only pair on display for all to admire at The Smithsonian. The iconic shoes that once dazzled us on screen won’t be strutting down the yellow brick road anytime soon. Light, time, and elements have discolored the once sparkling slippers.

The slippers from the 1939 film were given to the museum in 1979.

The museum recently launched a Kickstarter campaign, and hopes to raise $300,000 to restore the 2,400 fragile sequins along with building a state-of-the-art case to help them last into the future.

Last year, their first Kickstarter raised over $700,000 to preserve Neil Armstrong’s space suit he wore on the moon.

So if you’d like to preserve a piece of American history, harness your inner Tin Man and join the cause!
