If you purchased a standing desk recently, you might want to listen up. According to a new study, those who primarily stand for work are twice as likely to develop heart disease than those who predominantly sit.
Researchers at the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto followed over 7,000 participants for a 12 year period, looking for a correlation between standing or sitting for work and the development of heart disease. The participants consisted of both men and women, taking into account body mass index, physical demands of the jobs, and socio-demographic variables.
Published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, those who primarily stood for work were twice as likely to develop heart disease as well as a variety of health problems such as varicose veins. This was caused by the pooling of blood in the lower half of the body which happens during long periods of standing. Cardiovascular problems arise as they body has to work harder to get the blood in the lower half of the body back to the heart.
But don’t quit your job just yet! If you must stand for work, researchers say finding moments to sit will help the circulation process.
