Two Arrested In Fatal Shooting Of 4-Year-Old While Playing In Front Yard

FOX 11 News (KTTV) -- Nearly a day after the fatal shooting of a 4-year old boy as he was playing on the front yard of his aunt's Highland home, Sheriff's homicide detectives have arrested two men on murder charges.

20-year old Darron Daniels of Highland and 25-year old Maurice Kelley of Fontana were arrested Thursday near 11th and G streets in San Bernardino, said Sgt. Trevis Newport of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s homicide division.

4-year-old Daniel Munoz was playing with stuffed animals in his family's front yard when he was hit by gunfire and killed, authorities said Thursday.

Deputies found the injured boy Wednesday evening after responding to reports of gunfire in Highland, said Adam Cervantes, a San Bernardino County sheriff's deputy.

Daniel Munoz was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators were looking for the driver of a four-door, 1990s-model white Toyota Camry with black bumpers who detectives believe was the intended target of Daniels and Kelley after an argument.

Residents said they heard multiple gunshots as Daniel and his 5-year-old cousin were playing outside his grandmother's house at the time, Reina Isabel Hernandez, the boy's aunt, told The Sun newspaper. She said she saw the boy fall face-down after the shooting.

Daniel was carried back inside by his grandmother, who was crying, neighbor Luis Dominguez told the newspaper.

From Hal Eisner:

Daniel Munoz's mother says she left her 4-year-old son Daniel with his Grandmother in Highland while she took her other kids to Knotts Berry Farm. While enjoying the family outing there was gunfire outside the Grandmother's house. The 4-year-old was killed while playing outside.

Authorities are trying to figure out who pulled the trigger as many as 12 times in what neighborhood Mary Lee Gonzalez describes as a dangerous community.

This, while Edgar Smith says of the violence, "It needs to stop. It really needs to stop." His wife Denise says, "We lost two sons in the city due to being murdered. One was 31 and murdered in his driveway. And, One was 18 and murdered in his driveway also."
