1 dead, 5 wounded in Monday shootings on South, West sides

- A 68-year-old man was killed and at least five other people were wounded in shootings Monday on the city’s South and West sides.

The man was gunned down at 10:06 a.m. in the Douglas neighborhood on the South Side, police said.

He was involved in an argument with a 74-year-old woman in the 2600 block of South Indiana when he pulled out a gun and a struggle ensued, according to Chicago Police. During the struggle, the gun went off and the man was shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately provide information on the fatality.

As of early Tuesday, police said the shooting appeared to be domestic-related and the woman was being questioned as Area Central detectives conducted a homicide investigation.

Most recently, a 51-year-old man was wounded in an Auburn Gresham neighborhood shooting on the South Side. He was driving about 7:35 p.m. in the 7600 block of South Ashland when another vehicle pulled up next to him and someone inside shot him, police said. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand.

About 4:45 p.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the foot in the 4700 block of South Prairie in the South Side Bronzeveille neighborhood, police said. The man was transported to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

Monday morning, a 24-year-old man was shot in the West Side Austin neighborhood. He was shot in the groin in the 500 block of North Central and took himself to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man is a gang member and not cooperating with investigators.

Monday’s first shooting happened at 9:43 a.m. in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. A 35-year-old man was shot in the leg and arm and a 49-year-old woman was shot in the leg in the first block of South Whipple, police said. They took themselves to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were both listed in good condition.
