Man shot to death, 4 wounded while filming rap video in Gresham

- A man was shot to death and four other people were injured when someone opened fire on a group filming a rap video early Tuesday in a Gresham neighborhood park on the South Side.

A group was filming in Foster Park in the 1400 block of West 84th Street at 2:19 a.m. when someone approached them and started shooting, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. The shooter then ran away.

Damond A. Dawson, 23, was shot in the back of the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:10 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 8400 block of South Justine Street.

A 19-year-old woman was shot twice in the groin and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was listed in serious condition, Gaines said.

Three more people who were also injured in the shooting later showed up at Christ Medical Center, Gaines said. A 20-year-old man was shot nine times in the leg and shoulder; a 25-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the leg; and an 18-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the back. Their conditions were all stabilized.

Chicago Police could be seen investigating between two park district buildings, near basketball courts, a playground and tennis courts in the center of the park. Police tape blocked 83rd Street between Bishop and Laflin Streets.
