On Thursday, family members were having a water balloon fight in the 6800 block of South Calumet to try and stay cool on a hot afternoon when their fun was shattered by gunfire.

Zariah Muhammed, 6, was one of seven children outside. She was shot in the head. Her 22-year-old uncle, David McCray, was shot multiple times and killed.

"The guy come from this way, he came from around the corner, he shot at my son and my son fell, he said mom I'm shot. I really can't talk because my chest hurts so bad," said Phyllis McCray, the victim’s mother. "My grand-baby come running behind me, she said 'grandma I'm shot, I'm shot.'"

Zariah's aunt says the little girl still has the bullet lodged in her skull and will undergo surgery Friday morning at Comer Children’s Hospital, where she remains in stable condition. Police say the apparent target of the shooting, David McCray, was a documented gang member.

This is the second time this week a young child has been shot. On Monday, a 10-year-old boy was shot in North Lawndale as he played on his porch with his twin sister. Tavon Tanner was critically wounded with the bullet damaging his pancreas, intestines, a kidney and spleen.

Last month, 6-year-old Tacarra Morgan was shot on her front porch. On Thursday in her back yard, she was relishing in the kindness of Chicago Police officers who have sort of adopted her and with their own money bought a pool for her and set it up.

“This was a very special day, I really appreciate that all the officers came out in support of my daughter with this pool, help set it up, they have been so supportive of me since day one,” said mother Carolyn Morris.

When garden hoses wouldn't do the job, the fire department came to the rescue and quickly filled the pool for Tacarra and other neighbor kids to enjoy.

“I like my pool,” Tacarra said.
