2 killed, 30 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago

CHICAGO (STMW) - Two men were killed and at least 30 other people wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday night and Monday morning.

The most recent homicide happened Sunday evening in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood.

Ashton Simpson, 36, was inside a building in the 8300 block of South Wood when he heard gunshots and went outside to check it out about 9:10 p.m., according to Chicago Police.

Police said he was then shot in the chest, face and arm. Simpson, who lived on the same block, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

About two hours earlier, another man was fatally shot in a separate Auburn Gresham attack.

Akim Gaddis, 19, was standing outside in the 8400 block of South Loomis at 6:53 p.m. when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Gaddis, who lived on the same block, was shot in the back and taken to  Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 7:48 p.m., according to the police and the medical examiner’s office.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened early Monday in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the South Side.

A 21-year-old woman and 19-year-old man were standing outside with a group in the 700 block of West 93rd Street about 1:40 am. when someone walked up and fired shots, police said. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the foot, while the man was shot in the leg, police said. They were both taken to Christ Medical Center, where their conditions were stabilized.

Sunday night, a 29-year-old man was shot in the head in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood. The shooting happened at 10:40 p.m. at 800 block of East Bowen Avenue inside a basement apartment, police said. The suspect pulled a handgun, fired shots and then ran away, police said. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

About 2o minutes earlier, three men were shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. The men–ages 20, 21 and 22–were walking in the 4200 block of West Augusta Boulevard at 10:20 p.m. when a white SUV drove by and someone inside the vehicle shot the men, police said. The 20-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg, and the 21-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg. They were both taken to Stroger Hospital where their conditions were stabilized. The 22-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the left foot, and was taken to Norwegian American Hospital where his condition was stabilized. The men are all known gang members, police said.

About 10 p.m., a 30-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were shot in the South Side Englewood neighborhood. The pair were standing on a front porch in the 5600 block of South May Street when a suspect exited a white car and shot at them, police said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the left wrist, and the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the left calf. Both were taken to St. Bernard Hospital where their conditions were stabilized. The man is a know gang member, police said.

At least 22 other people were wounded in shootings across the city between 11:10 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday.
