- Authorities are offering $25,000 for information leading to an arrest of the person who beat a 46-year-old woman to death Monday night in north suburban Zion.

Officers were called at 9:48 p.m. Monday about a battery near Cancer Treatment Centers of America at 27th Street and Gabriel Avenue, according to a statement from Zion police.

They arrived to find 46-year-old Shannon Vincel, a cancer patient, suffering severe head trauma.

The suspect had approached her on the sidewalk while she was sitting outside the cancer center, and struck her in the head with an unknown object, police said.

Vincel of Springfield, Missouri, was taken to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she died at 11:02 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Neighbors down the street are troubled by what happened.

“First of all she was already fighting for her life, so I feel it was already a bad situation gone wrong. And for that person to do that to someone who is already fighting for their life just shows what type of person he is,” said Shannon Harper.

Police have not said why they believe Vincel was attacked, but they're now treating this as a murder investigation.

“It's scary because my mom has a daycare. It's kids, my nephews, my nieces, my daughter, they're all out here playing and that's scary. If that can happen here where I've been living my whole life, it can happen anywhere,” said neighbor Crystal Harper.

Residents say the block is quiet, and that neighbors know one another well. However, even they worry about children who play just down the street from where the attack happened.

“Now I'm out here constantly out, walk up and down with them and tell them, you know it's getting late,” Shannon Harper said. "I'd rather be safe than sorry."

Police did not have a good description of the suspect.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America has pledged $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Vincel’s death, police announced Thursday.

Zion police and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force are investigating. Anyone with information should call police at (847) 872-8000, or Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.
