2 dead, 11 wounded in Chicago shootings Wednesday

Two men were killed and 11 other people, including a 4-year-old boy, were wounded in shootings Wednesday on Chicago’s South and West sides, according to Chicago Police.

The 4-year-old boy was shot in the South Side Englewood neighborhood Wednesday evening.

He was outside with family on a porch in the 5700 block of South Morgan about 5:40 p.m. when a vehicle drove by and someone inside opened fire, according to police. Relatives drove him to St. Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center, and he was later transferred to Comer Children’s Hospital in serious condition.

Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted Wednesday night that Englewood District officer had taken a person of interest into custody in connection with the shooting.

Most recently, a man was killed and another was critically wounded in the Far South Side Fernwood neighborhood.

The shooting happened at 10:35 p.m. in the 300 block of West 106th Street, according to police. A 25-year-old man was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene. A police source said he was a documented gang member. The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the death.

The other man, 43, was shot in the neck and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, an 18-year-old man was shot to death in the Southwest Side Lawndale neighborhood.

Officers responding to a call of a person shot found the man with a gunshot wound to the back about 4:45 p.m. on a porch in the 3100 block of West Douglas, according to police. Investigators believe he ran there from another location.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The medical examiner’s office confirmed the death, but could not provide further details Wednesday evening.

The most recent nonfatal shooting also happened in Lawndale Wednesday night.

A 17-year-old was standing on the street in the 1600 block of South Harding at 9:35 p.m. when someone shot at him from a vacant lot across the street, police said. He was shot in the right leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the boy is a documented gang member.

Three hours earlier, another man was shot in Lawndale. The 22-year-old was shot in the 1800 block of South Ridgeway about 6:35 p.m., according to police. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in fair condition.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, a man was grazed by a bullet in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. The 20-year-old was walking outside in the 5300 block of West Chicago about 4 p.m. when someone walked up to him, opened fire and ran away, police said. He suffered a graze wound to the back and was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

About 2:45 p.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side. He was outside in the 1600 block of East 79th Street when a light-colored SUV drove by and someone inside started shooting, according to police. He was shot in the leg and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said the man was not cooperating with investigators.

About two hours earlier, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side. The boy was standing on the sidewalk in the 100 block of East 57th Street at 12:38 p.m. when a male approached and fired shots at him, police said. He was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

A man was shot during a carjacking Wednesday morning in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the South Side. The 27-year-old was shot in the leg at 7:26 a.m. during a carjacking at a gas station in the 8900 block of South South Chicago Avenue, according to police. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in serious condition.

The vehicle stolen in the carjacking – a silver Pontiac Grand Prix with an Illinois license plate number of L925050 – is thought to have been used in a series of armed robberies and a fatal shooting in south suburban Summit.

Minutes earlier, a man was shot in the South Chicago neighborhood on the South Side. The 24-year-old man was shot in the chest in the 8400 block of South Mackinaw about 7:20 a.m., according to police. Two police officers arrived at the scene and administered first aid before paramedics arrived. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Police said the man is a documented gang member.

About 1 a.m., a woman was shot in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The 19-year-old was walking with a male in the 5300 block of South Rockwell when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. She was shot in the left leg and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where her condition was stabilized. Police said the woman might not have been the intended target of the shooting.

Wednesday’s first shooting happened shortly after midnight in the Longwood Manor neighborhood on the South Side. A 25-year-old man was standing outside in the 9700 block of South Green about 12:10 a.m. when a black Kia drove by and someone inside shot at him, according to police. He was shot in both legs and taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.
