2 wounded – one critically – in shooting near Bucktown nightclub

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two people were wounded, one critically, early Sunday after a shooting near a Bucktown nightclub on the North Side.

A 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were shot at 3:50 a.m. in the 1400 block of West Wabansia Avenue after a verbal fight within the group of people they went to the night club with, police said.

The two victims, the suspected shooter and other passengers were walking to their car when the suspect began fighting with one of the passengers, produced a gun and fired shots, police said.

The suspect fled from the scene in another car, police said.

Both victims were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. The woman was shot in the head and was listed in critical condition, police said. The man was shot in the leg and his condition had stabilized.

The crime scene on West Wabansia Avenue stretched from North Ada Street to North Elston Avenue. A white Hyundai Volster was parked on West Wabansia Avenue with the driver side door open and marked shell casings scattered around it.

The 23-year-old man’s best friend, Johnnie McCaskel, 23, of south suburban University Park, said he witnessed the shooting and saw a group of guys attack his friend.

“My best friend walked out of the club – I guess they thought he was somebody else – and they punched him…and he was knocked out,” McCaskel said.

The same guys then started “talking crazy and they just opened fire,” McCaskel said. He added that did not know the group of men but said one of them had dreads, a gray t-shirt and blue jeans.

McCaskel said his best friend is a good guy, who never bothers anybody. “He’s not fighter…All he wanted to do was come out and have a good time.”

His other best friend was murdered in Tennessee last month, McCaskel said.

“I just hope my friend is okay…He is my only other best friend, and I knew him since he was three years old,” McCaskel said, tears rolling down his face in the cold air.

“I can’t afford to lose another best friend.”
