Man charged with Des Plaines bank robbery

- A Des Plaines man was charged with robbing a bank Thursday afternoon in the northwest suburb after local police recognized him on video.

Timothy Chitwood, 53, is charged with bank robbery for holding up the U.S. Bank branch at 1223 E. Oakton St. in Des Plaines, according to Des Plaines police.

The non-takeover robbery happened at 12:43 p.m. Thursday, according to the FBI. No weapon was shown.

Chitwood entered the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money and implying he was armed, police said. The teller gave him more than $1,000 in cash and he ran away.

Officers responding to the robbery looked at surveillance footage and recognized Chitwood from previous interactions with him, police said. They took him into custody at his home a short time later, and all of the money stolen in the robbery was recovered.

Chitwood was interviewed at the police department and confessed to the robbery, according to police. He was turned over to the FBI to await federal charges.
