2 killed, 9 wounded in Thursday shootings across Chicago

- Two people were killed and at least nine more wounded in shootings across Chicago on Thursday.

The latest homicide happened about 6:40 p.m. in the West Side Homan Square neighborhood, where someone walked up to 41-year-old DeAndre Walton in the 3500 block of West Polk and shot him repeatedly, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Walton was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:56 p.m., authorities said. He lived in the first block of North Latrobe.

Thursday’s other fatal shooting happened about 12:15 a.m. in the Goose Island neighborhood. A 35-year-old man was found dead at the wheel of a vehicle parked in the 1000 block of North Willard Court with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. The Illinois Department of Corrections identified him as Lawrence Washington, a correctional officer since 2003. Police think the slaying was connected to another that happened just down the street about five hours earlier.

The latest nonfatal shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. in Logan Square. Two men, ages 18 and 24, were walking in the 2600 block of West Fullerton when someone in a passing white van opened fire, according to Chicago Police. The gunfire also hit a 42-year-old man who was driving nearby. The 18-year-old was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center with gunshot wounds to the arm and chest, along with the 42-year-old, who was shot in the back. The 24-year-old showed up at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center with an arm wound. Their conditions stabilized, police said.

About 4 p.m. in the South Side Chatham neighborhood, a 30-year-old man got into an argument with someone who shot him in the chest and groin in the parking lot of a gas station in the 8300 block of South Cottage Grove, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

At 2:51 p.m., a 26-year-old man was wounded in an Englewood drive-by shooting. He was walking in the 7200 block of South Emerald when someone in a green van shot him in the leg. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

A 14-year-old boy was shot about the same time in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. He was standing outside in the 200 block of South Lotus when someone walked up, shot him in the arm and leg and then took off in a vehicle, police said. He was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Just before noon, two men were shot in the 3300 block of West Douglas in North Lawndale. A 19-year-old was hit in the torso and a 29-year-old in the leg. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, police said.

Thursday’s first shooting happened about 2:20 a.m. in Austin. Someone walked up to a 19-year-old man in the first block of South Leamington and shot him in the back, police said. His condition was stabilized at Mount Sinai.
