Teen killed, 7 wounded in Monday shootings on South, West sides

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A 17-year-old boy was killed and at least seven more people were wounded in shootings Monday on the South and West sides of Chicago.

The homicide happened about 2 p.m. in the North Lawndale neighborhood, where a black vehicle pulled up to two boys walking in the 1300 block of South Homan and someone inside opened fire, according to Chicago Police. The 17-year-old was shot in the chest and hand and was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 2:31 p.m., authorities said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released his name. The other boy, 16, was shot in the buttocks and stabilized at the same hospital.

The latest nonfatal attack happened shortly after 7 p.m. in the South Chicago neighborhood. Two men were walking in the 8000 block of South Houston when someone walked up and started shooting, police said. A 21-year-old was hit in the back and taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and a 20-year-old was grazed across the abdomen and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. His condition was stabilized, police said.

About 6:25 p.m., a 15-year-old was shot in the right leg in the 1300 block of South Karlov in the Lawndale neighborhood, police said. He took himself to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized. Further details were not immediately available.

Just more than an hour earlier, a 50-year-old man was shot in the leg in Back of the Yards. He heard gunfire and realized he’d been hit shortly after 5 p.m. while standing in front of a home in the 5000 block of South Racine, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

About 4:30 p.m., a silver car pulled up to a 30-year-old man standing at a bus stop in the 13100 block of South St. Lawrence in the Golden Gate neighborhood, and someone inside shot him in the leg, police said. His condition was stabilized at Christ Medical Center.

Monday’s first shooting happened at 1:10 p.m. in South Chicago’s 8800 block of South Burley, where a 24-year-old man got into an argument with another person he knew who then shot him in the neck and chest, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial in serious condition.

The violence followed a weekend that saw 28 people shot across the city, nine of them fatally.
