Woman stabbed to death, suspected killer fatally struck by vehicle in Plainfield

PLAINFIELD, Ill. (STMW) - A woman was stabbed to death Tuesday night in southwest suburban Plainfield, and her suspected killer was fatally struck by a vehicle on I-55 a short time later.

Police were dispatched for a welfare check at a home in the 25000 block of Prairie Grove Court at 8:07 p.m., according to a statement from Plainfield police.

Officers entered the home and found 47-year-old Susan C. Cunningham stabbed multiple times, according to police. Unresponsive and not breathing, she was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora, where she was pronounced dead. No one else was inside the home when police arrived.

Preliminary investigation indicated the incident was a domestic-related homicide, police said. A short time later, the suspect was fatally struck by a vehicle on I-55 just north of Route 126.

Craig J. Cunningham, 47, was walking on the interstate when he was hit by a vehicle about 8:15 p.m. in the northbound lanes, according to Illinois State Police and the Will County coroner’s office.

He was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m., the coroner’s office said.

Both Cunninghams lived in the home on Prairie Grove Court, and the incident was domestic-related, police said.

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, the coroner’s office said, adding the man walked out in front of traffic.

Police couldn’t say whether the incident was a suicide or accident, but no citations or charges have been issued against any drivers.
