CHICAGO (STMW) - One man was killed and at least five other people were wounded in shootings Monday across Chicago, police said.

The man was shot to death Monday morning along a Safe Passage Route in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, according to Chicago Police.

Officers responding to a call of a person shot just after 8:20 a.m. in the 300 block of North Central Avenue found the 21-year-old with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, police said. Witnesses observed a gray sedan driving away from the area.

The man was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition where he later died, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately confirm the death.

The block where the shooting happened lies on a Safe Passage Route for Ellington Elementary School at 243 N. Parkside Ave., according to the Chicago Public Schools website. The scene of the shooting is less than two blocks from the school.

Police believe the shooting is gang-related.
