A Cook County Jail detainee briefly escaped custody Wednesday morning after a court appearance on the Far South Side.

Brandon Crosby, 21, ran away in handcuffs about 11:15 a.m. while boarding a bus after his appearance at the courthouse at 727 E. 111th St., Cook County sheriff’s spokeswoman Sophia Ansari said.

Sheriff’s deputies ran after him, and Chicago Police officers took him into custody near 111th and Cottage Grove, less than half a mile away.

Crosby was booked into the jail on Sept. 21 on an aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm charge, but during his court appearance Wednesday, that charge was upgraded to attempted murder, Ansari said.

Crosby was also charged Thursday with one count of escape, Ansari said. He was also wanted on a warrant for failure to appear on a domestic battery with physical contact charge in Champaign County.

He remains in the jail on a $150,000 bond, according to the sheriff’s office, and is scheduled to appear in bond court for the new charge Friday.
