A 48-year-old northwest suburban Elgin man was convicted Friday of selling synthetic marijuana out of his business.

John G. Monteleone, was convicted of possession of more than 200 grams of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of more than 200 grams of a controlled substance, delivery of less than 50 grams of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a statement from Kane County state’s attorney’s office. He lives in the 100 block of Brookside Drive.

About noon Sept. 13, 2013, authorities conducted a search warrant at Monteleone’s business in the 1400 block of Commerce Drive in northwest suburban Algonquin and seized nearly 200 grams of “spice,” a synthetic form of marijuana, prosecutors said. Authorities then searched his Elgin home and wife’s vehicle, turning up about 3200 more grams of synthetic marijuana.

Monteleone told investigators that he bought the synthetic marijuana in one-gram foil packages for $5 each and sold them for $10, the Daily Herald previously reported. Police seized 168 one-gram packages from his store, King Puff-N-Stuff at 1409 Commerce Dr., and 3582 packages from his wife’s vehicle.

His wife, Tracy Monteleone, pleaded guilty to possession of more than 200 grams of a controlled substance on Sept. 14, 2014, prosecutors said. She was sentenced to four years of probation.

Monteleone’s sentencing hearing is set for Dec. 21, prosecutors said. He faces between six and 30 years in prison. He had been freed on a $2500 bond, but it was revoked after his conviction and he was taken into custody.
