Employee of Kane County court clerk's office charged with theft, forgery

KANE COUNTY, Ill. (STMW) - An employee of the Kane County circuit court clerk’s office is facing multiple felony charges for stealing more than $500, then altering records to cover up the theft, prosecutors said on Friday.

Kelli D. Brackett, 39, turned herself in Friday after a warrant was issued charging her with theft, forgery, official misconduct, and tampering with records as a public official, all felonies, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

Brackett surrendered Friday morning at the Kane County sheriff’s office and was released on $500 bail, 10 percent of the $5,000 bond set in the warrant, a statement from prosecutors said.

Prosecutors claim that between September 2014 and August 2015, she “stole more than $500 from the Kane County circuit court clerk’s office and knowingly altered court records.” She was responsible for the money as part of her job duties.

Brackett, of the 15S block of Farnsworth Avenue in Aurora, and formerly of Sycamore, is next scheduled to appear in court Feb. 5 before Associate Judge Linda Abrahamson in St. Charles.

If convicted, she faces up to 7 years in prison, and must also pay restitution, prosecutors said.
