Feds wants 4 1/2 years for Chicago Chinese restaurant owner
CHICAGO (AP) - The chef-owner of several Chicago-area Chinese restaurants is set to be sentenced later this month for underpaying taxes by not reporting cash receipts.
The Chicago Tribune reports that prosecutors are asking that Tony Hu serve about 4 1/2 years in prison. Hu pleaded guilty in May to hiding nearly $10 million in cash sales over nearly five years. That allowed him to avoid about $1 million in sales taxes.
Hu's attorneys have asked for probation, citing his hard work and record of community giving. Defense attorneys also provided letters from Hu's friends and family asking for leniency.
The 48-year-old Hu, whose real name is Hu Xiaojun, runs the Tony Gourmet Group. Besides restaurants in the Chicago area, the group operates one restaurant in Connecticut and one in Las Vegas.
