SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - A 21-year-old man has been charged with battering Cook County sheriff’s deputies who were trying to take him into custody Monday morning at the Bridgeview courthouse.
Artavius Sims was ordered held without bond by Cook County Associate Judge Michael Kane for failing to meet the conditions of his probation on a drunk-driving charge, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
As courtroom deputies took Sims into custody, he pulled away from one deputy, causing her to fall and suffer serious injuries, according to the sheriff’s office. Sims then punched another deputy in the face, and a third was struck by a podium as Sims tried to run away, but ran into his own public defender, also knocking him to the ground.
Two deputies handcuffed Sims and returned him to the lockup.
Sims, who originally faced a DUI charge, now also faces two counts of aggravated battery and two counts of resisting an officer, according to the sheriff’s office. He was ordered held on a $90,000 bond Thursday for the new charges.
