Man charged with firing shots at police on Far South Side

CHICAGO (SUN TIMES MEDIA WIRE) - A man has been charged with firing shots at Chicago Police officers early Sunday in the East Side neighborhood on the Far South Side.
Carlos Padilla, 19, was charged with felony counts of aggravated assault/using a firearm against a peace officer, and aggravated assault with discharge of a firearm, according to police.
Shots were fired at officers responding to a report of gunfire in the 10300 block of South Avenue N at 3:38 a.m. Sunday, according to police. No one was struck, and the officers did not return fire.
At least two suspects ran into two separate buildings on that block and barricaded themselves inside, police said. A SWAT team responded and cleared the buildings without incident. Padilla was taken into custody.
Padilla, who lives on the block where the shooting happened, was ordered held on a $1 million bond at the Cook County Jail, according to police and the Cook County sheriff’s office. He is next scheduled to appear in court July 29.
