Man convicted of sex assault outside South Elgin gas station

ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) - A northwest suburban man was convicted Tuesday of sexually assaulting someone he knew outside a gas station last year in South Elgin.

A jury found 45-year-old Juan C. Calderon guilty of two felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and domestic battery for the attack that happened about 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15, 2014, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

Calderon was driving the victim’s pickup truck when they pulled into the gas station in the 0-100 block of Route 25 in South Elgin and got into a heated fight, prosecutors said.

He then punched, bit and sexually assaulted the person twice, according to prosecutors, who did not release the victim’s age or gender.

Calderon, of the 1900 block of Evergreen Street in Hanover Park, had been jailed on a $1.5 million bond since the day after the attack.

He faces between 12 and 63 years in prison. Sentencing was scheduled for Feb. 18, 2016.
