Man fatally shot in Gresham is Chicago's 100th homicide this year

A 28-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday evening in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, marking the 100th homicide in Chicago this year.

The shooting happened about 5:40 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Elizabeth Street, Chicago Police said.

Brian Dowell Jr. was shot several times and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead about half an hour later, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said. He lived in the same neighborhood where he was shot.

Dowell Jr. was the 100th homicide during the first 76 days of 2018, according to Sun-Times data.

Last year, Chicago reached 100 homicides on Feb. 27.
