CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A man fleeing an attempted robbery was shot by a Chicago police officer Wednesday afternoon in the East Garfield Park neighborhood.

Officers were called about 3 p.m. after a man fired shots as he tried to rob someone in the 600 block of North Lawndale Avenue, Chicago Police Patrol Bureau Chief Fred Waller said.

A woman from across the street noticed the robbery and intervened, Waller said. Shots were fired at the woman’s vehicle, and police were called.

Officers and the woman pursued the suspect to the 600 block of North Central Park Avenue, where a confrontation ensued and an officer fired a single shot, striking the man in the abdomen, according to Waller.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious but stable condition, according to police. No one else was injured during the incident.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tweeted a photo of a weapon allegedly recovered from the person who was shot.

Additional information has not been released.
