Police: 2 dead, 9 wounded in Monday shootings across Chicago

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two men were killed and at least nine other people were wounded in shootings Monday across Chicago, police said.

A 30-year-old man was fatally shot about 6:40 p.m. in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, according to Chicago Police. He suffered gunshot wounds to the upper chest and armpit in the 5100 block of South Washtenaw. The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Additional details were not immediately available and the Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately provide information on the fatality Tuesday morning.

About 4:30 p.m., a man was killed in a West Pullman neighborhood shooting on the Far South Side. Reginald Fleming Jr., 18, was walking through a vacant lot in the 12000 block of South Prairie when a dark car pulled up nearby and someone inside shot him in the head, authorities said. Fleming, who lived in the 2100 block of 175th Street in Lansing, was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 7:51 p.m.

Most recently, a 30-year-old man was shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. He was standing outside about 8:40 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Gladys when he heard gunfire and felt pain, police said. He was shot in the leg and took himself to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

About 6:05 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was shot in another Gage Park neighborhood attack. The teen was riding a bicycle in the 3500 block of West 57th Street when someone shot him in the foot, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition stabilized.

Earlier Monday afternoon, a 23-year-old man was shot in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. At 3:51 p.m., he was walking in the 5600 block of West Madison Street when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

About 20 minutes earlier, a 19-year-old man was shot in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. About 3:30 p.m., he was in an alley in the 5900 block of South Paulina when someone walked up and shot him in the foot, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

About 12:45 p.m., two teenage boys were shot while standing in a gas station parking lot in the 3800 block of West Roosevelt in the North Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, police said. A 15-year-old boy was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and a 17-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to Stroger Hospital. Both of their conditions were stabilized.

Monday morning, a 17-year-old boy was critically wounded in a drive-by shooting in a separate North Lawndale attack. About 8 a.m., the teenager was in the 1300 block of South Kedzie when a vehicle drove by and someone inside fired shots, police said. He was shot in the thigh and taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital. Police said the vehicle was possibly a white van, which took off after the shooting.

About 3:30 a.m., a 23-year-old man was shot in the Wicker Park neighborhood. He was sitting in the back seat of a vehicle in the 2000 block of West Pierce when he heard gunfire and felt pain, police said. The man was shot in the right side of his torso and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

The day’s first shooting happened about 2:40 a.m. in East Garfield Park. A 44-year-old man was sitting on a front porch in the 700 block of South Central Park when someone in a white car opened fire, police said. He was shot in the right forearm and leg, and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Monday’s shootings followed a weekend in which eight people were killed and at least 44 others were wounded in shootings citywide.
