2 teens tried to steal car at gunpoint in Wilmette

Police in north suburban Wilmette are searching for two teenage boys who tried to steal a woman’s car at gunpoint Monday night.

The woman had pulled into her driveway in the 400 block of Sandy Lane about 8:50 p.m. when two teens in ski masks — one carrying a gun — walked up and threatened to shoot her if she didn’t hand over her keys and purse, according to Wilmette police.

The pair ran off when the woman started screaming. They got into a waiting silver or white Toyota Camry and took off eastbound on Wilmette Avenue, police said.

Police said the attempted carjacking likely was connected to a series of similar robberies in other northern suburbs. They cautioned residents to be vigilant around shopping centers and gas stations after dark. Anyone with information should call police at (847) 256-1200.
