5 killed, 13 wounded in Chicago shootings Tuesday

SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE - Five people were killed and at least 13 others were wounded in shootings Tuesday on the city’s South and West sides.

The latest fatal shooting happened at 9:16 p.m. in the West Englewood neighborhood. Officers responding to reports of shots fired at 9:16 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Wolcott found 32-year-old Douglas Bowman lying unresponsive in the street, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Bowman had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m., according to police and the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 800 block of East 46th Street.

About 10:45 a.m., two men were slain in more West Englewood gunfire. They were sitting on a porch in the 1800 block of West 58th Street about 10:45 a.m. when a dark Chevrolet drove by and a passenger fired shots. Raymond D. Griffin, 30, was shot in the neck and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 6:30 p.m., authorities said. He lived on the same block where the shooting happened. A 31-year-old shot in the back died at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said. His name has not been released.

Earlier Tuesday, a 51-year-old man was gunned down in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. Donald Dockery was standing outside at 2:37 a.m. in the 600 block of North Ridgeway when a vehicle drove by and someone inside fired shots, authorities said. Dockery was shot in the back and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 4700 block of West Maypole.

Two hours earlier, a man was killed and another wounded in a shooting in the Roseland neighborhood. Officers heard gunshots at 12:37 a.m. and found the victims with gunshot wounds in the 11100 block of South Michigan. Gerald Gordon, 19, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene at 1 a.m., authorities said. The other man, 22, was shot in the head and taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Tuesday night in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side. A 38-year-old man was sitting in a parked vehicle about 9:40 p.m. in the 1000 block of East 93rd Street when several males pulled up in a tan Jeep Cherokee and one of them opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the shoulder and was taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized. A police source said he is a documented gang member.

Less than 10 minutes before that, a 25-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet in the Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. At 9:36 p.m., she was standing with a small group playing dice in the 4100 block of West 19th Street when someone came out of the south alley and fired shots at the group, police said. The shooter then ran away. The woman suffered a graze wound to the left side of her head and was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

About an hour earlier, a 34-year-old man was shot in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He was standing outside at 8:37 p.m. in the 1000 block of North Homan when someone walked up and opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the leg and taken to Norwegian American Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

Shortly before 6 p.m., a 25-year-old man showed up at Stroger Hospital after being shot in the thigh in the first block of North Wood on the Near West Side, police said. His condition was stabilized.

About 2:45 p.m. a man was shot in the back and critically wounded by someone who robbed him in the 8000 block of South Muskegon in the South Chicago neighborhood. He was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center.

About 45 minutes before that in the West Side Austin neighborhood, two people were wounded in an shooting in the 5300 block of West Crystal at 2:08 p.m. A 16-year-old boy shot in the buttocks was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, and an 18-year-old man shot in the left leg was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. They were both in good condition.

Less than 10 minutes earlier, another man was shot in Roseland. The 39-year-old was shot in the right leg in the 600 block of West 107th Street at 10:38 a.m., police said. He was taken in fair condition to Roseland Community Hospital.

About 9:30 a.m., two men were wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. They were standing outside in the 8600 block of South Morgan when a red vehicle with two people inside pulled up and one of them fired shots, police said. A 35-year-old man was shot in the back and right foot, and taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center. A 36-year-old man was shot in the left thigh and left ankle, and was also taken to Christ, where he was listed in fair condition.

More than four hours earlier, a 41-year-old man was shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. About 5:10 a.m., he was in his vehicle in the 4500 block of South Wood when shots rang out and he was struck behind the right ear, police said. He drove himself to Saint Anthony Hospital, and was later transferred to Mount Sinai, where he was in serious condition.

Tuesday’s first shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. in Park Manor, where a 20-year-old man was in a store in the 7100 block of South State Street when someone fired shots from outside, police said. He was shot in the leg and buttocks and taken to Christ, where his condition was stabilized.

The day’s bloodshed continued a recent burst of violence with the city’s deadliest weekend in at least three years, followed by 19 more people shot on Monday.
