Police: 7 dead, 30 wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Seven people were killed and at least 30 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday afternoon and Monday morning.

In the latest fatal shooting, two armed robbers were gunned down by a liquor store employee Saturday night in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago Police.

Officers responded to a call of an attempted robbery at Z&S Food and Liquor, 1351 W 87th St., just after 8:30 p.m., authorities said.

Two suspects had walked into the store about 30 minutes earlier and announced a robbery. When one of them showed a handgun, an employee took out his own weapon and fatally shot the two would-be robbers, police said.

They were identified as 15-year-old Keshawn Marzette and 17-year-old William Larson, both of the 8300 block of South Throop, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, a man was killed and a woman wounded in a Back of the Yards neighborhood shooting on the South Side.

Erick L. Lacey and the woman, both 19, were sitting in a vehicle in the 5200 block of South Peoria Street about 2 p.m. when a white car pulled up behind them and someone inside fired shots, authorities said.

Lacey, who lived in the 5100 block of South May Street, was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The woman was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said.

Friday night, a 37-year-old man was shot to death in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Emergency crews responded about 9:45 p.m. to the shooting in the 4500 block of West Deming, where they found Matthew Ehrenberg unresponsive inside a home with gunshot wounds to the armpit, authorities said.

Ehrenberg, who lived in the same block, was dead at the scene, authorities said. Police have classified it a homicide investigation.

Less than an hour earlier, a 20-year-old man was shot to death in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 9 p.m. found him dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds to the head inside a minivan parked in the 6600 block of South Fairfield, police said. Authorities were still withholding his name Sunday night pending notification of his family.

About fifteen minutes earlier, a man was killed and four others were wounded in a Lawndale neighborhood shooting on the Southwest Side.

They were standing on a sidewalk in the 1500 block of South Kedzie about 8:45 p.m. when they heard shots and felt pain, police said.

Raymon Blount, 29, was shot in the shoulder and chest and took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities said. He lived in the 300 block of North Pine.

Two 28-year-old men each shot in the right thigh went to the same hospital, though one drove himself and another was take by ambulance. Their conditions were stabilized, police said. A 21-year-old man shot in the left ankle took himself to Saint Anthony Hospital, where his condition was also stabilized. A 26-year-old man who suffered a graze wound to the right thigh declined medical attention at the scene.

Police think the shooting was gang-related.

In the weekend’s first fatal shooting, a man was killed and two others were wounded in a shooting in the Ravenswood neighborhood, about half a mile from Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s home on the North Side.

An argument broke out about 7:30 p.m. Friday at a party inside an apartment in the 1900 block of West Belle Plaine, police said.

Pablo Ulloa, 25, pulled out a handgun and shot a 23-year-old man in the neck and another 25-year-old man in the abdomen, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

The second 25-year-old then pulled out another gun and shot Ulloa in the chest, police said.

Ulloa, of the 4700 block of North Whipple, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:53 p.m, authorities said. The other two were taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

The attack happened about four blocks southwest of Emanuel’s home in the 4200 block of North Hermitage.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Sunday night in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

A 21-year-old man was driving an SUV in the 2500 block of North Laramie about 11 p.m. when he heard gunfire and realized he’d been shot in the foot, police said. He drove himself to Community First Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

Earlier Sunday evening, a 19-year-old man was critically injured in a West Side Austin neighborhood drive-by shooting. He was walking on the sidewalk in the 4700 block of West Erie at 6:35 p.m. when a brown car drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the abdomen, right shoulder and right forearm and showed up at Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. A police source said the man is a documented gang member.

About an hour earlier, two 18-year-old men were shot in the South Chicago neighborhood. They were walking on a sidewalk in near 80th Street and South Shore Drive about 5:30 p.m. when a gunman walked up and opened fire, police said. One man was shot in the back and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and the other was taken to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the back and elbow and a graze to the leg. Their conditions were both stabilized, police said.

At least 19 other people were wounded in separate shootings between 5 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday.
