Police: Man charged after Lake County traffic stop yields drugs, defaced gun

CHICAGO (STMW) - A Waukegan man faces several felony charges after a traffic stop in north suburban Beach Park netted drugs and a gun with a defaced serial number, police said.

Jamar D. Neyland, 28, was charged with armed violence, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of ammunition by a felon, possession of a defaced firearm, two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and three counts of possession of a controlled substance, according to a statement from the Lake County sheriff’s office.

About 5 p.m. Tuesday, Neyland was pulled over for “traffic violations” near Sheridan Road and Paddock Avenue in Beach Park, police said. The deputy could smell burned cannabis coming from Neyland’s vehicle.

A drug-sniffing police dog led officers to 29 packaged bags of heroin, which weighed more than eight grams, a gram of crack cocaine separated into three packages and another bag of cocaine that weighed one gram, police said.

A loaded .40 caliber handgun with a defaced serial number was also found inside the vehicle, police said.

Neyland was ordered held on $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court next on Feb. 1, police said.
