Two charged with car theft after man caught burglarizing house near Lisle

LISLE, Ill. (STMW) - Two people were charged with stealing a car after one of them was later caught burglarizing a residence Saturday near southwest suburban Lisle.

Detectives from the DuPage County sheriff’s Tactical Narcotic Team noticed a vehicle Saturday that had been reported stolen a few days earlier from Palatine, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

When the officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver crashed, the sheriff’s office said. Two people later identified as 25-year-old Nicholas Stafford and 28-year-old Sylwia Kopacz ran away from the scene.

Later that day, deputies found Stafford burglarizing a residence on Riverview Road in unincorporated Lisle and arrested him, the sheriff’s office said. Kopacz was also taken into custody that evening.

Stafford was charged with aggravated fleeing, possession of a stolen vehicle, residential burglary and possession of a stolen license plate, all felonies, the sheriff’s office said. Bond was set at $230,000 for the Burbank man.

Bond was set at $20,000 for Kopacz, of Palatine, who was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle and resisting a police officer.
