Driver sought in West Chicago hit-and-run turns himself in

A man sought by police for a hit-and-run crash—in which a person was struck by a minivan while mowing the lawn last week—has turned himself in to West Chicago police.

The incident happened Friday in the 1000 block of Joliet Street, where a man was struck by a white minivan while cutting his grass, according to West Chicago police. The vehicle then drove off.

A video of the crash was obtained from a neighbor’s home surveillance system and posted on the police department Facebook page to help identify the driver.

On Wednesday, Eulalio A. Garcia of West Chicago showed up at the police station and admitted being the driver of the minivan, according to police.

“Garcia explained while traveling northbound Joliet Street he veered off the roadway, causing him to drive over a curb. Mr. Garcia was unaware that he had struck a pedestrian,” a statement from police said.

He was cited for failure to render aid or give information regarding a personal injury crash,  a class A misdemeanor, according to police. He is scheduled to appear in court June 21.

The victim is recuperating at home.
