Wintry mix, thunderstorms possible Tuesday but worst of storm to miss Chicago

CHICAGO (STMW) - Welcome to February in Chicago — a smorgasbord of snow, rain and thunderstorms are all possible Tuesday in Chicago as a major winter storm system hits the Midwest, with the worst expected north and west of the city, according to the National Weather Service.

The “expansive” storm system will impact several states  in the Midwest from Monday night through early Tuesday, with the heart of the storm producing blizzard-like conditions, according to the weather service.

After 3 a.m., a mix of rain, snow and freezing rain will begin falling as temperatures hover just above the freezing mark, according to the weather service. Areas northwest of the city could get between one and two inches of snow. After 6 a.m., the wintry mix will change to all rain across the entire Chicago area as temperatures climb to a high of 43.

From noon until midnight, the rain will continue falling, with a chance of some thunder, according to the weather service. Very little or no snow and ice accumulation is expected.

On Wednesday, the slushy weather will continue with a slight chance of rain and snow showers, and temperature hovering around 35 degrees.

The wet weather will finally leave Thursday, which is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 30.
