Woman charged after 2 shot, 1 killed during failed Gary robbery

GARY, Ind. (STMW) - A 21-year-old woman has been charged after two people were shot — one fatally — during a failed robbery attempt Sunday evening in northwest Indiana, according to Gary police.

Darianna Hamblin, of the 3600 block of West 20th Place in Gary, was charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted robbery, according to Gary Police Lt. Thomas Pawlak.

About 7 p.m., a 55-year-old man from Olympia Fields and a 65-year-old from Chicago Heights went to the 3500 block of West 20th Avenue in Gary to make a purchase from Craigslist, when the man and woman they planned to meet with tried to rob them, Pawlak said.

One of the men opened fire, killing 22-year-old Brandon Johnson at the scene, according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

The shooters then called police. Hamblin fled to Methodist Hospital Northlake with a gunshot wound to the left thigh. She was treated and released Monday morning, police said.

Johnson lived in the 3700 block of West 21st Place in Gary, authorities said.
