Woman struck and killed by car on Southwest Side, driver arrested

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A woman who was struck and killed while crossing a street Sunday in the Archer Heights neighborhood on the Southwest Side has been identified.

Sandra A. Mitchell, of the West Elsdon neighborhood, was struck about 3:20 a.m. in the in the 5100 block of South Archer Avenue, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Mitchell was crossing the street at Kolin Avenue with a group of friends when a man driving a gray Chrysler 2007 struck her. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 3:58 a.m., officials said. An autopsy Monday found she died of multiple injuries from being struck and her death was ruled an accident.

The driver, a 38-year-old man, was taken into custody, police said. Alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash.

The Major Accidents team was investigating the crash.
