A community activist connected to the Black Lives Matter movement committed suicide outside the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus Monday night, according to the Columbus Dispatch. MarShawn McCarrel II, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene after authorities responded to reports of a shooting near the front entrance around 6 p.m. local time, Lt. Craig Cvetan of the State Highway Patrol told the paper.

Active in the Black Lives Matter movement, McCarrel helped organize Ohio-based protests in the wake of the Michael Brown incident in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014. He also founded a youth mentorship program called Pursuing Our Dreams. The program later launched the Feed the Streets initiative to help Ohio’s homeless population.

"We don't have any evidence to know the reason why he did it," Cvetan said.

However, McCarrel had posted on his Facebook page earlier in the day that his "demons won,” writing simply "I'm sorry."
