BMX star Dave Mirra was found dead Thursday afternoon in Greenville, N.C., from an apparent suicide, according to multiple reports.

According to ABC 27, police discovered Mirra, 41, sitting in a truck at the 200 block of Pinewood Road with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He reportedly had been with friends before the incident. Police are investigating his death, according to TMZ Sports. Mirra owned the record for the most X Games medals in history with 24 until his mark was surpassed by Bob Burnquist in 2013. His 14 X Games gold medals is second-most of all time, just one behind Shaun White.

"We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift. He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon," Greenville mayor Allen Thomas said.

Mirra is survived by his wife and two kids. Mirra posted a photo of him and his wife on Instagram before his death.
