Evel Knievel's Stratocycle jumps up for grabs at auction

Evel Knievel is having a moment.

The late stuntman’s life is the subject of this year’s award-winning documentary “Being Evel,” and a biopic is in the works that could see Channing Tatum wearing a red, white and blue jumpsuit with cape soon.

Knievel tried his own hand at acting once. He played himself – a very fictional version of himself -- in the 1977 camp classic “Viva Knievel,” alongside Mexican drug lords and a cast that included the likes of Red Buttons, Frank Gifford and Lauren Hutton.

In one memorable moment, Knievel crashes his Stratocycle through a glass door to rescue his trusty, alcoholic mechanic, played by Gene Kelly. The custom Harley-Davidson XLCH 1000 outfitted with an elaborate fairing sporting wings and an eagle-head paint job.

A toy version of the bike was sold at the time, and is a collector’s item worth hundreds of dollars today. But now, you can buy the real thing.

The Stratocycle is being auctioned online by Invaluable.com, with the hammer set to fall on October 1st. It’s been restored, and comes with a folio of documents to prove its provenance. The auction company estimates its value at $200,000-$300,000, which sounds right on target, considering one of Knievel’s helmets was recently sold for $60,000.
