A group of police officers wanted to do something special for a Calhoun boy mourning the loss of his father.

Nicholas Sasser's father died from throat cancer in April and in hopes of cheering him up, the Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) surprised the 13-year-old Thursday morning and made his dream of becoming a Capitol police officer come true.

The day began with the Calhoun Police Chief arriving at Nicholas’ home and surprising him with a police uniform.

"They came to our house and knocked on the door and I asked who are you here for and they gave me a uniform," said Nicholas.

Nicholas took a ride in a helicopter and traveled to DPS headquarters, where his day as a cop officially started. He was greeted by Governor Nathan Deal at the State Capitol, followed by a series of fake scenarios that were planned to help give Nicholas a memorable experience. One of those included a suspicious package located in Representative Johnny Meadows’ office.

"I never imagined this could happen," said Nicholas' mother, Tammie Sasser.  "I want Nick to have a lot of good role models since his passed away."

This is the third year DPS has made a deserving child’s dream come true.
