A man died Monday evening after he and another man were pulled from the waters of Lake Michigan near the 31st Street Beach on the South Side.

Rescue crews responded shortly after 8 p.m. for the swimmers in distress near the beach at East 31st Street and Fort Dearborn Drive, according to Chicago Police and Fire Media Affairs Chief Juan Hernandez. Chicago Fire Department divers pulled the men from the water.

Markius Woods, 32, was recovered and taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:41 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 2100 block of South Christiana.

An autopsy Tuesday found Woods drowned and his death was ruled an accident.

A 25-year-old man was also pulled from the water and taken to Mercy Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, Hernandez said.
