2 detainees charged with taking over part of Cook County Jail

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two detainees charged with taking over a division of the Cook County Jail for about three hours last month have been ordered held on a $1 million bond each.
Division 10 detainees Cordarryl Stevenson and Martin Alvarado took control of the housing unit about 4:30 p.m. on July 28, covering the floor with soapy water and obscuring the fixed cameras in the unit before tearing them down completely, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
About three hours later, the jail’s Emergency Response Team entered the unit and took custody of Stevenson and Alvarado.
An injured detainee who had been taken hostage was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, and a weapon was recovered, according to the sheriff’s office. The other 15 detainees and staff members were not hurt.
Stevenson, 27, was charged with possession of contraband in a penal institution, forcible detention, aggravated unlawful restraint, aggravated battery, criminal damage to county property and mob action, all felonies, according to the sheriff’s office. He has been in custody at the jail since September 2014 on charges of armed robbery and aggravated vehicular hijacking in Skokie, and has previously been convicted of residential burglary and robbery.
Alvarado, 24, was charged with aggravated unlawful restraint, aggravated battery, forcible detention, mob action and possession of contraband in a penal institution. He has been in the jail since April 2015 on a charge of first-degree murder for beating his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son to death at their Cicero home.
On Monday, Judge Donald Panarese Jr. ordered each man held on a $1 million bond, court records show. They are both scheduled to appear back in court Aug. 29.
