2 deputies, 8 detainees injured in Cook County Jail melee

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two correctional officers and eight detainees were injured when a massive fight broke out Tuesday night at the Cook County Jail on the Southwest Side.

At least 11 ambulances were called about 8:30 p.m. to Division 9 of the jail at 2854 W. 31st St., according to the Chicago Fire Department and Cook County sheriff’s office.

Eight detainees of the maximum-security division were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, including puncture wounds, according to the sheriff’s office. Three had been released as of Wednesday afternoon, and five remain hospitalized.

Two deputies who were hit by food trays were also taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Sophia Ansari said. One was treated and released, and the other remains hospitalized Wednesday afternoon for observation.

An unspecified number of other detainees were treated at the jail for minor injuries. The building was under control by 9:30 p.m.

“There is an ongoing investigation into the source of the fights as well as the weapons used in the altercations,” Ansari said.
