FOX 32 NEWS - A tragic accident at a fraternity party has friends of a student from Northwest Indiana in shock.
“Anybody lost that young, it's a very, very tragic loss. But with Yiorgo, it's hit so much harder, cause everybody loved him,” said Meagan Thornburg, a student at Munster High School and friend of 19-year-old Yiorgo Karnezis.
Karnezis had a smile and a demeanor that put others in a good mood.
“He was always willing to help people out no matter how they felt or how their day was,” said Alainna Carey, who knew Karnezis from school.
The 2016 Munster High graduate was starting his freshman year at Indiana State University. He died early Sunday morning after falling off a boat at a social event for his fraternity, Sigma Chi.
On Sunday night, hundreds of students gathered outside the high school for a candlelight vigil to remember Karnezis, singing songs in his memory and trying to make sense of what happened.
“It was like really shocking, like I still can't believe it completely because out of everyone that it could've happened to, its Yiorgo. Like everyone knows him, like everyone loves him, so it's just like really hard for everyone at the school,” said junior Olivia Hesterman.
Karnezis was in choir and chorale and also played soccer.
“I am a student athletic trainer here so I'm always at the soccer games, all the home games and he would just come up to me and mess around with me and be like hey, how's your day going and even if I was having the worst day possible, he would be able to bring a smile to my face,” Thornburg said.
The medical examiner in Terre Haute, Indiana has not determined a cause of death and authorities have not said if alcohol was a factor. Friends are still in disbelief.
“I couldn't believe it because you have this momentary shock where your kind of like wow this actually happened, it’s one of your peers,” Carey said.
