3 family members killed, 2 injured in Des Plaines crash

DES PLAINES (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Three people were killed and two others were injured in a crash Sunday evening in northwest suburban Des Plaines.

A Lexus was traveling southeast on Rand Road about 6:05 p.m. when it struck the passenger side of a Volkswagen that was turning west onto Golf Road, causing it to careen off the roadway, police said.

The three people who were riding in the Vokswagen – 20-year-old Amra Dilji; her mother, 48-year-old Edije Dilji; and her father, 57-year-old Serif Dilji – were all pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. They all lived in Des Plaines.

Autopsies conducted Monday found all three of them from injuries related to the crash and their deaths were ruled accidental, the medical examiner’s office said.

The 16-year-old son of Serif and Edije Dilji was driving the Volkswagen, police said. He was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with life-threatening injuries and remained hospitalized Tuesday morning.

The 38-year-old Des Plaines man who was driving the Lexus was taken to Lutheran General for minor injuries, police said. He was treated and released.

There was no indication that either driver was impaired or intoxicated, police said. No one was charged or cited in connection with the crash as of Tuesday morning.
