CHICAGO (FOX 32 news) -- A three-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital Saturday afternoon after he was shot in the leg. Police say he was on the sidewalk near 56th and Wolcott in the West Englewood neighborhood when someone opened fire in his direction.

“It doesn't make any sense how things like this is happening day after day,” said family friend Ken Woodward.

Woodward rushed to the scene Saturday with the victim’s uncle. They said the child and his parents were visiting a grandmother on the block and the shooting happened right in front of the home.

“He just got a kite and was getting ready to take it out to fly the kite and this happened,” said Woodward.

Police say the child was not the intended target. Neighbors fear this shooting and others like it could be a taste of what may be a violence summer in the city.

“It’s not even hot outside yet,” said neighbor Araceli Montes. “Nice couple of days and they don't know how to act being outside.”

Since Friday afternoon in Chicago one person has been shot and killed another 17 wounded.

The boy was reported in stable condition Saturday night at Comer Children's hospital.

Police won't say who they are looking for, but do say they are still investigating.
