CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Don't know what to get the family for Christmas? How about a new best friend?
This weekend, PAWS Chicago will have their 8th annual 36 hour Adopt-A-Thon with close to 200 pets up for adoption.
“Finding somebody a new best friend is very rewarding,” said volunteer Randy Egge. “A lot of them will already know how to sit, stay, play, things like that.”
Nearly 4,000 volunteers work with the pets that they rescue, mainly from the city pound and other organizations.
Just this year, PAWS is close to adopting out 6,000 pets.
PAWS’ Sarah McDonald recommends adopting during the holidays
“People tend to be home more around the holidays, so if you were looking for a puppy or any new animal into your home, you will have time to be there, the whole family might be together,” said McDonald.
While it may be a good time to adopt, they don't recommend pets as presents.
“It's a lifetime commitment and the whole family should be a part of,” said McDonald.
On average, a dog can cost about $1,500 a year between food and trips to the vet. But a new best friend is priceless.
The Adopt-a-Thon runs 11am Friday – 11pm Saturday.
