Majority of Chicagoans delighted with winter's warm start

People who make their living off cold weather will take a bit of a hit this year.

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - People who make their living off cold weather will take a bit of a hit this year.

However, the warmth is still helping others get work done.

There’s Christmas cheer on State Street, yet something's still missing.

FOX 32: You're singing Jingle Bells but there's no snow.

"I know. That's okay. We don't need no snow. This is lovely. We do not need no snow,” one woman said.

On Monday, big crowds were enjoying the holiday windows at Macy’s with temperatures in the low 50's.

Chicagoans know they're catching a break.

"We've been in boots and gloves and mittens and scarves and rain, so it's pretty nice we're able to walk around comfortably now,” the woman added.

"It's way too hot out here for December. I mean in Chicago?" another woman said.

FOX 32: You complaining?

"I'm not,” she responded.

There were no complaints either at Maggie Daley Park, where FOX 32 found a couple hundred people waiting in line for the ice ribbon.

"It's a lot warmer than I thought it would be. It's like 50 degrees outside. It's supposed to be snowing a few days before Christmas,” one girl said.

"If you want to go skating you could skate in shorts and a t-shirt out there,” a man added.

But too warm could cause problems for the park district, which says it might be forced to close the ice ribbon later this week if temperatures rise into the 60s. Even today, the ice is a bit squishy.

"It's warm so it's a little weathered, a little watery in a couple places,” a boy said.

Along the lakefront, FOX 32 found lots of joggers, bikers and walkers, including a family from San Francisco in Chicago for a college visit.

"I thought it would be very cold. Last time I was here there was snow this time of year,” a woman said.

"I told everybody to bring gloves, hats and three layers. Yeah, and I think it's colder in San Francisco right now,” a man added.

The warm weather is also good news for construction crews at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs tell FOX 32 that unlike last year's brutal winter, they're way ahead of schedule on this year's piece of the renovation.

Still, you can't please everybody.

"I wish it was snowing, honestly. I'm probably in the minority,” a girl said.
FOX 32: Why?

"Because it's Christmas,” she responded.

FOX 32: You want a white Christmas?

“Yes,” she said.
