WAUKEGAN (STMW) - It took two hours, but firefighters were able to safely rescue a kitten stuck in a drainpipe Monday morning in north suburban Waukegan.
A resident heard a cat’s cries coming from a drainpipe in the 600 block of Home Avenue and called police about 10:30 a.m., according to a statement from Waukegan police.
Animal control officers responded and found that a kitten had fallen down an open drainpipe in the front yard of a home, police said.
Waukegan Fire Lt. Steve Berkman and firefighter Rob McDonald spent almost two hours trying to rescue the cat. The firefighters used a piece of conduit pipe and ran a rope through the pipe to fashion a loop, and were able to lasso the kitten and lift it out of the pipe.
The kitten was taken to animal control for an examination and appeared to be in good condition.
Police said it’s not yet clear if the kitten has an owner. If no owner is found, the kitten will be turned over to a rescue for adoption.
