CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Could the mother of two boys have been the main target in the murder of an entire family in Gage Park? It’s one of the possible theories investigators are looking into.
The only thing that’s certain is nothing has been ruled out.
As the community continues to pull together to grieve with the relatives of the Martinez family who were slaughtered in their home last week, Manuel Cruz, the father of 13-year-old Leo and 10-year-old Alexis, is desperately trying to get to Chicago from Mexico.
The Mexican Consulate is working with him to expedite the paperwork.
“He's devastated and that's the reason we are trying to facilitate as much as we can because it's very hard for him and especially because he has to wait a couple of days before he comes to the US,” said Marcelino Miranda, who’s the Mexican Consul for Legal Affairs.
But four days after the bodies of six family members were found inside their Gage Park home, police are still at a loss for a motive or suspects.
Sources told FOX 32 that investigators are considering that Maria Martinez may have been the ultimate target. She was the only one shot to death, the five others were stabbed and in some cases also beaten.
While robbery and murder-suicide are still considered possible options, they seem less likely to investigators than the two other theories. Those include a domestic connection focusing on Martinez's ex-friend. The couple recently went through a nasty breakup. But so far, he is not considered a person of interest, though police have talked to him.
The other theory involves the murders being some kind of hit by a Mexican cartel, although Maria Martinez has no known criminal record.
FOX 32: Are Mexican police doing any investigation back in Mexico related to this case?
“At this time, the Chicago Police hasn't addressed any request to the Mexican Government or to the Mexican Consulate,” said Miranda.
Police have not found either of the murder weapons: no knife, gun or bullet casings. However, a gun unrelated to this case was found in a box in the home.
