CHICAGO (FOX 32 News)- Before he starred in the musical that changed Broadway, before he appeared in a best-picture Oscar winning film, before he returned to Chicago for a national tour, Anthony Rapp was a kid from Joliet.
Anthony Rapp has been a performer for quite some time now. Born in Chicago, raised in Joliet, he struggled in New York for years - until he was invited to audition for a no name, off-Broadway musical called “Rent.”
But it was a big deal, the musical soon made the jump to Broadway, and pretty soon, the entire world was talking about it.
And now, years later, Rapp is returning to his hometown in the Broadway tour of the musical “If/Then,” which follows a young woman in New York looking for a fresh start.
And for Rapp, both “If/Then” and “Rent” share a very powerful connection.
He’s the very definition of “local kid done good.”
From the suburbs to Broadway and back again, Anthony Rapp is a reminder to any kid out there that the stage lights shine on everyone if you’re willing to put in the work.
