BBB warns of scammers after flooding

A warning for residents in the area dealing with floodwaters: be wary of questionable contractors who might try to take advantage of people who are desperate to make repairs.

The Better Business Bureau says the recent flooding creates an ideal environment for  scammers to come out.

The Better Business Bureau says be leery of people who knock on your doors promising fast repairs, that's why it's come up with a list of do's and don'ts for consumers. The following are Better Business Bureau tips:

-Don’t hire unknown contractors
-Get a written contract
-Licensed and bonded
-Never pay in advance
-Never pay cash
-Use credit card or check
-Resist high pressure sales

For starters, don't hire people who show up at your door offering services. when you do hire a contractor, always get a written contract that specifies services provided in a guaranteed time frame, make sure they are licensed and bonded, never pay for a full job in advance, never pay cash -- pay by credit card or check for your protection -- resist high pressure sales tactics such as the " good deal" you'll only get if you hire the contractor on the spot.

The bottom line: don't let your emotions during this stressful time overrule your judgment.

Consumers are advised to contact the Better Business Bureau with any questions or to check out any companies first.
